Supporting Learning at Home
Senior Phase – Supporting young people at home
Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning at home, especially during times of SQA assessments. This support can include creating a conducive learning environment, encouraging active revision, and fostering a positive attitude towards learning.
Here’s how parents can support learning at home :
- Creating a Conducive Learning Environment:
- Designated Study Area:
Help your child identify a quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions.
- Organized Resources:
Ensure they have necessary materials like pens, paper, and notebooks, and potentially access to the internet.
- Comfort and Well-being:
Make sure they have comfortable seating, are well-rested, and have access to snacks and water and take appropriate breaks.
- Active Revision:
- Familiarize with Past Papers:
Encourage practice with SQA past papers specific to their subjects and level.
- Revision Guides and Tips:
Utilize SQA resources like revision guides and tips for creating study plans and taking effective notes.
- Time Management:
Help them create a calendar for the year and track exam dates. When needed support realistic revision schedules.
- Show Interest:
Demonstrate genuine interest in their studies and acknowledge their efforts.
- Fostering a Positive Attitude:
- Balance Revision with Relaxation:
Encourage breaks and leisure activities to manage stress and maintain motivation.
- Show Encouragement:
Acknowledge their achievements and efforts, and let them know you’re there for support.
- Addressing Additional Support Needs:
- Inform us of needs:
If your child has additional support needs that you believe are not being met please contact your child’s pastoral teacher to discuss.
- Communication and Collaboration:
Maintain open communication with the school to ensure your child receives the necessary support. Confirm assessment arrangements when this is requested.
- Additional Resources:
- SQA Website: Scottish Qualifications Authority – SQA Access SQA resources, including past papers, exam timetables, and information on assessment arrangements.
By actively supporting their learning at home, parents can play a vital role in helping their children succeed in their SQA assessments.
