National 5 History – Advice to parents and carers from staff

  • Pupils should learn the techniques for the 6 different question types from the summary sheet, skills booklet and videos provided.
  • Pupils should regularly practice skills questions under timed conditions (allowing 1.75 mins per mark in the question). These can be found on the SQA website or their OneNote pages.
  • Pupils should pay particular focus to older material that has not been covered in class recently such as Scottish Wars and Free at Last.
  • As it is worth a significant portion of their final grade, students should follow all instructions on their assignment carefully and thoroughly. These will be found on OneNote and Teams.
  • When revising, students should make use of active revision techniques such as mind map making, flash cards, quizlet or similar. Just reading and rereading the content on OneNote is not recommended.

Higher History – Advice to parents and carers from staff

  • Pupils should ensure they complete and revise all essay plans, taking on board feedback from their teacher. All 4 essay plans for Britain and for Germany must be revised, no topics can be omitted.
  • Pupils should learn 6 – 8 facts for each Scottish sub-section from their revision summary page. This is a large amount of information and cannot be left until the last minute but should be consistently revisited.
  • As it is worth a significant portion of their final grade, students should follow all instructions on their assignment carefully and thoroughly. These will be found on OneNote and Teams.
  • Pupils should regularly practise timed essays (45 minutes) and Scottish questions (25 and 20 for ten and eight mark questions respectively).
  • Pupils should not avoid topics that they find difficult and should be proactive in seeking assistance where required.

Advanced Higher History – Advice to parents and carers from staff

  • Students should consistently be reading through relevant historical texts and sources to build up relevant knowledge of the topic and the historical debate around it.
  • Pupils should regularly practise timed essays (50 minutes) and Skills questions (roughly 3 mins per mark).
  • Pupils should focus on preparing all of the essay topics for which source questions can be asked and 2 of the 4 topics for which essays alone can be given.
  • Particular emphasis is given to independent study for this course but students should still not avoid topics which they find difficult and should be proactive in seeking assistance from their teacher where they need it.
  • As it is worth a significant portion of their final grade, students should follow all instructions on their dissertation carefully and thoroughly. Particularly they should keep to any deadlines that are given for submitting sections of this as it may be difficult to feedback on work that is not handed in in time.
