Exam Preparation

National 5/Higher Music – Advice to parents and carers from staff

  • Regular practice on both instruments.  Pieces get the best marks when they most closely reflect the notes in the written music and can be played in time with the accompaniment, without hesitation. We can lend out instruments.
  • All composing and the written review should be submitted on time via Showbie to meet the chunked deadlines.  This allows the teacher to offer regular feedback.
  • All the information required for the understanding music paper can be accessed in OneNote.  Students should be able to give a definition for each term (concept) and be able to recognise it in a piece of music.  OneNote has definitions and musical examples.
  • The SQA assessor for performing will visit between late February and mid March.  The exact date will be posted on Teams as soon as the school hears.  Performing is worth 50% (25% per instrument).
  • Composing and the review (worth 15%) will be submitted to the SQA and the completed versions should be with the teacher by 23rd March.
